Spiced Almond Milk White Russian

About a year ago, I came across a rather unassuming cocktail called ‘falling silk stockings.’ Among all the woo woos and panty droppers, it was an unassuming choice. Creamy with cashew milk, smooth, richly spiced and lethal (a damn good cocktail, as I recall) It was one of those drinks that had been experienced, loved and nearly forgotten. Until the other week, when I came across cinnamon almond shake, with sweet cinnamon and date syrup. These were the exact flavours that had been the base of that oh-so fabulous cocktail.

Naturally I had to take it to the kitchen and get recreating so I could share it with all you milkshake lovers.

A tipsy afternoon of cocktail tasting later, I had it down.. Lightly spiced with cardamom and ginger, a sweet hit of dates. I would describe it as halfway between a milkshake and a cocktail. The sort of drink that I like to thing would have flown off the counter in any good 1950s diner.

In terms of food accompaniment, I do think this beautiful beverage would be mighty fine with a fist clenching, hunk of burger, or something equally filthy. Unfortunately I had no burger at hand, but I shall definitely be prepared for next time!

Equally I am thinking, this tasty treat would also would work as decadent post-dinner pudding treat. You could also shake it over ice and serve it up in a martini glass, if you’re feeling fancy.

I opted to serve mine in old jam jars. The only thing missing was a stripey straw….

Spiced Almond Milk White Russian Recipe

Makes 2 large shakes, or 4 little tumblers

  • 1 ltr /4 cups almond milk
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 10 medjool dates, pitted
  • 1 heaped tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 heaped tsp ground ginger
  • 1 heaped tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra for dusting
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 4-6 ice cubes
  • 4-5 shots vodka

Add the milk and vodka to a blender with the sea salt, dates, spices and ice cubes and blitz. Pour immediately in glasses, dust with ground cinnamon and serve.
